Luard Morse Scholarship awarded to Allyson Carpenter and Laura Campbell

Allyson Carpenter and Laura Campbell

Allyson Carpenter, a Political Science Major/Community Development Minor, and Laura Campbell, a Biology Major/Chemistry Minor, both at Howard University in Washington, D.C., have been selected as this year's recipients of the English–Speaking Union (ESU) Luard Morse Scholarship.  The scholarship provides $25,000 towards a semester of study at an English university during the 2015-16 academic year.

All the World's a Stage for Teen from Evanston Township High School

Harry Thornton from Evanston, a student of Anne Lefkocitz at Evanston Township High School in Evanston, won the English-Speaking Union Chicago Branch regional Shakespeare competition. The event was part of the English-Speaking Union National Shakespeare Competition. Harry Thornton had already won his school Shakespeare competition at ETHS. The ESU Branch competition was held on Monday, February 9 at Roosevelt University in Chicago, and 23 school winners from the Chicago area participated. Harry impressed the judges and captivated the audience with his performance of Hamlet and his recitation of Sonnet 136. He will go on to represent the Chicago area as a semi-finalist at National competition in April (regularly held at the world-renowned performing arts complex, Lincoln Center, in New York City).

Mr. Rose's book introduces a Winston Churchill we have not known before. Award-winning author Jonathan Rose explores in tandem Churchill's careers as statesman and author, revealing the profound influence of literature and theater on Churchill's personal, carefully composed grand story and on the decisions he made throughout his political life.
