Milburnie Fishing Club Fall OutingAlbum posted Oct 30, 2024 On Sunday, October 6, 2024, the Research Triangle Branch of the ESU gathered for fun and fellowship at Milburnie on a beautiful Fall afternoon. After enjoying a favorite beverage, members and guests were treated to a typical North Carolina barbeque luncheon, including the famous Milburnie oyster casserole and banana pudding for dessert. Our program featured NCSU Professor Walt Wolfram, a linguistics specialist. Dr. Wolfram's message was entitled "Talkin' Tarheel". He covered many dialects that have formed language across our state since the early days of settling NC. Following his talk, lively discussions ensued regarding favorite colloquialisms around our state. "Bless your heart"! A wonderful program! |

2024 Annual MeetingAlbum posted Sep 4, 2024 The 2024 Annual meeting of the Research Triangle Branch was held at the Cypress of Raleigh on Thursday, May 2, at 5:30 p.m. Members enjoyed a reception time followed by a delicious dinner. During dessert a delightful presentation was given by our Triangle ESU Shakespeare Competition winner, Georgia Howard, from Apex High School. A short business meeting followed with election of a new slate of officers and new board members. Our speaker for the evening was a former English Professor, Dr. Flo Durway who gave a very informative program entitled "I'll bet you didn't know this about Shakespeare" |
12th Night CelebrationAlbum posted Mar 6, 2024 On Sunday, January 7, 2024, the Research Triangle Branch of the ESU celebrated 12th Night at the NC Governor's Mansion. Members and guests were treated to a traditional English luncheon including Shepherd's Pie and Sticky Pudding. Following the delicious luncheon, a wonderful program was presented by Eric Mitchko, general manager of the NC Opera. The program included a history of opera and the value of hearing opera sung in the language in which it was originally written. Two gifted members of the NC Opera Company, Bailey Sutton and Miles Jenkins accompanied by Kate Lewis, offered arias sung in English as well as the language in which they were written. It was a most informative and enjoyable experience! |
The Night Before Christmas CarolAlbum posted Mar 18, 2024 On Sunday, December 3, 2023, the Research Triangle Branch of the ESU met at the NCSU University Club at 12:30 p.m. for a delicious buffet luncheon. A wonderful program entitled "The Night Before Christmas Carol" followed the meal. David zum Brunnen, a gifted actor, portrayed Charles Dickens as he was writing his classic work, "A Christmas Carol". The presentation included clever scene changes as Dickens interacted with his various characters in his story. It was a most entertaining program, enjoyed by all. |

Fall Outing at Milburnie Fishing ClubAlbum posted Oct 11, 2023 On Sunday, October 1, 2023, the ESU Research Triangle Branch gathered for a Fall Outing at Milburnie Fishing Club in Raleigh. In this wonderfully wooded lakeside setting members enjoyed a favorite beverage while listening to guitar music by Brad Steed. Afterward, a delicious barbeque luncheon was served, followed by a very entertaining program by our recent TLAB scholar, Elizabeth Balazs, an English teacher at Research Triangle Charter School. She studied this past summer in London and gained valuable knowledge and expertise, which she has since incorporated in her classroom. One of her students, Cora McCracken, followed her remarks with an original drama presentation to the delight of everyone in attendance. In all, it was a wonderful way to spend a beautiful Fall afternoon. |
2023 Annual MeetingAlbum posted May 22, 2023 The Research Triangle Branch of the ESU met for an Annual Meeting on April 20, 2023. Members and guests gathered at 5:30 pm at The Cypress of Raleigh to enjoy a favorite beverage and greet one another for the final meeting of the year. The room was decorated with vases of beautiful white tulips on every table. A delicious buffet dinner was enjoyed by all. President Margaret Steed welcomed everyone as she opened the meeting. She introduced Nominating Committee Chairman Bob Leak, who presented the slate of officers and board members for the coming year. The slate was duly elected with enthusiasm. Incoming President Linn Ginsler then thanked Margaret Steed for her service this past year and presented her with a thank you gift. Dr. Mary Susan Fulghum was then welcomed to present her wonderful program on "The Amazing Literature and Legacy of C.S. Lewis". Dr. Fulghum has spent years reading and studying the life and literature of this brilliant author, and she encouraged all present with her knowledge of how to select, read and enjoy his works. |
Brunch with Jack Lewis Speaking on the Queen's JubileeAlbum posted Apr 18, 2023 On March 19, 2023, members and guests were treated to a charming talk by the Hon. John Baker Lewis, Jr., a longtime Scholar of the British Empire and ardent admirer of the late Queen Elizabeth II. President Margaret Steed welcomed everyone and brought Linn Ginsler to introduce the recent Triangle winner of the Student Shakespeare Competition, Ali Patalano, who presented her skillful interpretation of Lady Macbeth's speech. Then Betsy Moye introduced Jack Lewis who regaled us with his tales of the Queen. Everyone enjoyed a delicious buffet luncheon at the NCSU University Club. In all it was a very well-attended and entertaining event. |

Presentation on Historic Halifax by Carl BurkeAlbum posted Mar 14, 2022 On March 6, 2022, members gathered at the NC State University Club in Raleigh for a buffet luncheon and a fascinating talk by Carl Burke, site manager at Historic Halifax State Historic Site. Located on the Roanoke River, the town of Halifax developed into a commercial and political center at the time of the American Revolution. North Carolina's Fourth Provincial Congress met in Halifax in the spring of 1776. On April 12 that body unanimously adopted a document later called the "Halifax Resolves," which was the first official action by an entire colony recommending independence from England. |

2020 Student Shakespeare CompetitionAlbum posted Mar 2, 2020 On February 27, 2020, the audience enjoyed watching high school students from the area perform in the annual ESU Student Shakespeare Competition, held at William Peace University, Raleigh. Thirteen students competed with excerpts from Shakespeare's plays and sonnets. This year's winners were: first place, Soraiah Williams, from Panther Creek High School, who performed as Cleopatra in "Antony and Cleopatra" and Sonnet 91; second place, Rebekah Walker, from Garner Area Homeschoolers, who performed as Isabella in "Measure for Measure" and Sonnet 91; and third place, Safie Anderson, from Wake Forest High School, who performed as Constance in "King John" and Sonnet 6. Bob Leak, past president of the Research Triangle Chapter, presented Ms. Williams with a beautiful crystal award, generously sponsored by long-time ESU supporter Alice Irby. Laura Levine, Theater Arts Director at Apex High School, helped coordinate the event. |

Page-Rollins White Garden Tour and LuncheonAlbum posted Apr 23, 2018 We welcomed spring on April 19, 2018, with a visit to the Page-Rollins White Garden at the Sarah P. Duke Gardens at Duke University in Durham. The White Garden was inspired by the white-flowered cottage gardens of England. The event was hosted by Frances Rollins, who told us about how she planned the garden as a tribute to her parents. Bill LeFevre, the Executive Director of the Gardens, and Jason Holmes, Curator of the Gardens, gave presentations, after which we toured the lovely white garden. After the tour we returned to the Doris Duke Center for a delicious catered lunch. |

The exhibit commemorates the centennial of the U.S. entry into the war in 1917, with a focus on North Carolina's role and stories of Tar Heel bravery. The 6,500-square-foot exhibit is believed to be the largest state history museum exhibit of its kind. |

Milburnie Fall OutingAlbum posted Nov 11, 2022 The Research Triangle Branch of the ESU gathered on October 23, 2022 for a Fall Outing at Milburnie Fishing Club, one of Wake County's Oldest Social Clubs, which has been hosting governors, legislators, and prominent Raleigh families for 100 years. The Fall colors were breathtaking in the wonderful rural lake setting. Members and guests enjoyed beverages including NC wines and gathered around a roaring fire in the clubhouse before enjoying a delicious traditional barbecue luncheon including Milburnie's famous oyster casserole. Following dessert, Phil Kirk entertained all present with a very informative talk on the wine industry in North Carolina and it's extensive growth in a few short years. All left planning a visit to a NC winery in the near future. |
