Saint Francis University hosted the English Speaking Union's Central PA Regional Shakespeare Competition on Saturday, February 17 at JFK Auditorium. Students from eight high schools presented monologues and sonnets from the works of William Shakespeare.
Carlisle High School student, Ava Rose Wendelken, won first place by reciting Sonnet 115 and performing her monologue from Henry IV. The highlight of her first place prize includes the Saint Francis Departments of Literature, Language and Fine Arts sponsoring her entrance participation fee for the National Shakespeare Competition in New York City on April 23, 2018. Ava Rose will compete with winners from our other 49 states to become National Shakespeare Competition Champion.
Second place went to Dalia Shvarstman from Harrisburg Academy High School. Tied for third place was Hope Showers, Juniata Mennonite H.S., and Alexander Winnick, Hershey H.S. Along with competition certificates, all competitors received gift bags containing the complete works of Shakespeare and Saint Francis items.
"All of the competitors did very well. The fact that our four judges scored a tie for third place shows the level of talent in these young men and women," says Competition Coordinator Bonnie M. Resinski.
High schools that participated were Carlisle, Delta, Harrisburg Academy, Hershey, Juniata Mennonite, Phillipsburg-Osceola, State College, and Susquehanna.
