History of the ESU

The English-Speaking Union of the United States was created to fulfill a mission.  It was formally organized in the United States in 1920 and arose from the conviction of its founder, Sir Evelyn Wrench and a group of like-minded American and British friends, that maintenance of the close personal and national ties forged during World War I was necessary for the preservation of peace. He imagined the ESU as an inclusive organization "founded in no narrow attitude of race pride, in no spirit of hostility to any people."  Its educational mission would be carried out by a host of activities allowing for personal contact between peoples at every level.

The Charleston Branch was established in the early l930s and is one of 70 branches in the United States and 50 international branches. Members are a cross-section of people who are either native to or have adopted Charleston as their home.

Our monthly meetings feature local, national and international speakers from a variety of fields. Their lively and informative talks are held at different venues but often at The American College of the Building Arts preceded by an informal social time with light refreshments. In addition to these meetings we have an annual Annual October/November Lowcountry Shrimpboil, an Annual Christmas Party, and a traditional English Garden Party held at one of Charleston's historic district mansions.

There are many volunteer opportunities available for members. Membership in the Charleston branch includes membership in the National organization and an opportunity to enjoy varied social and educational events. You are cordially invited to join us.
