GREENSBORO TEEN COMPETES IN 34th ANNUAL ENGLISH-SPEAKING UNION NATIONAL SHAKESPEARE COMPETITON IN NEW YORK CITY

With a performance of a sonnet and monologue from Shakespeare, Roxanne Cowett from Greensboro, NC, a student of Lindsey Clinton-Kraak at Weaver Academy in Greensboro, placed as a semi-finalist in the 34th annual English-Speaking Union National Shakespeare Competition in New York City. The Competition took place on May 1, 2017 on the stage of the Mitzi Newhouse Theater at Lincoln Center with 54 semi-finalists from as many ESU Branch competitions nationwide. Roxanne previously won the ESU Greensboro Branch competition.
The winner of the 34th English-Speaking Union National Shakespeare Competition, Ogechi Egonu, representing the San Francisco Branch, received a full scholarship to attend the American Shakespeare Center Theatre Camp in Staunton, VA, this summer. Second place winner, Brandon Burk, from the Kentucky Branch, won a cash prize of $1,000 from The English-Speaking Union, while the third place winner, Trevon Wainwright, representing the Kansas City Branch of the ESU, received an award of $500 provided by The Shakespeare Society.

Shakespeare Competition begins at 10:00 a.m.
In this program, high school students nationwide read, analyze, perform, and recite Shakespeare monologues and sonnets in as many as three qualifying stages: school, community (ESU Branch) and national levels. This national effort involves 15,000 students and over 1500 teachers who encourage their students to increase their self-confidence and develop critical skills as they come alive through Shakespeare's timeless works. Our winners get a chance to compete in New York City and then on to compete for the opportunity to study acting in England.

A Gala Evening of Theater and Music with O'Henry
Greensboro Historical Museum
The Greensboro Branch of the English Speaking Union joined with the Greensboro Historical Museum to celebrate the 152nd birthday of wrinter and native son, William Sydney Porter (O'Henry) on September 11, 2014. A cocktail buffet in the Lobby Reception Gallery of the Museum was enjoyed by a capacity crowd. After dinner, guests assembled in the Mary Noris Preyer Hall to enjoy live performances of 5 of O'Henry's short stories. The delicious pre-performance buffet was a delightful prelude to the sold-out (SRO) production which kept us laughing and "glued to our seats" for the surprise endings. Guests also enjoyed vintage music by local performers during the evening.
