English in Action is a program that matches newcomers to the U.S. with American volunteers for weekly, one-to-one conversation practice sessions. EIA helps students master conversational English and fosters cross-cultural, global understanding through English.
We follow the same meeting schedule as the UW, since traditionally the majority of our students have some sort of association with the University. Our first class was January 6th and we started with only three students. This is often the case and usually the numbers build within the next couple of weeks. This quarter we added one additional student. There are currently five tutors, which worked well as there were always enough to work one-on-one.
A couple of highlights: One student has a green card and we spent time preparing her for job interviews, She gained confidence and was grateful for the help. On the last day of the quarter we had a ethnic pot-luck, always a favorite. Sadly for us, one student is returning to her country, but on the bright side we have three returning in autumn and expect more as September is the beginning of the academic year.
