Our next Happy Hour is a fascinating discussion and historical look at notable African-Americans who have played the Bard including Ira Aldridge, Paul Robeson, James Earl Jones, Denzel Washington, Morgan Freeman, Frances Foster, Audra McDonald, & Fran Dorn. About Charles Dumas

Charles Dumas is a teacher, writer, and lifetime political activist. He is professor emeritus from the School of Theatre at Pennsylvania State University, where he was the first African-American to receive tenure, become a full professor, and be appointed emeritus. He was a Fulbright Fellow at Stellenbosch University in South Africa. He has performed or directed in ten Shakespeare plays including Othello three times. 

Formerly, he was the Director of the Acting in Media program at Temple University and associate professor in PSU's Department of African and African-American Studies. He has a juris doctorate from Yale Law School and was a Hendler Fellow in screenwriting at the American Film Institute.

Dumas has acted in, directed, or written more than 300 plays, films, and commercials. He received an Emmy Award for his ensemble work in "Separate but Equal" with Sidney Poitier. He received a fellowship for playwriting from the Pennsylvania Council of the Arts. He was honored as best actor by the Hollywood/Beverly Hills NAACP for his work in "B.C. Historia."
