BOSTON TEEN COMPETES IN 34th ANNUAL ENGLISH-SPEAKING UNION NATIONAL SHAKESPEARE COMPETITON IN NEW YORK CITY

With a performance of a sonnet and monologue from Shakespeare, Dominique Marshall from Natick, MA, a student of Juliet Bailey at The Rivers School in Weston, placed as a semi-finalist in the 34th annual English-Speaking Union National Shakespeare Competition in New York City. The Competition took place on May 1, 2017 on the stage of the Mitzi Newhouse Theater at Lincoln Center with 54 semi-finalists from as many ESU Branch competitions nationwide. Dominique previously won the ESU Boston Branch competition.
This year's winner of the 34th English-Speaking Union National Shakespeare Competition, Ogechi Egonu, representing the San Francisco Branch, received a full scholarship to attend the American Shakespeare Center Theatre Camp in Staunton, VA, this summer. Second place winner, Brandon Burk, from the Kentucky Branch, won a cash prize of $1,000 from The English-Speaking Union, while the third place winner, Trevon Wainwright, representing the Kansas City Branch of the ESU, received an award of $500 provided by The Shakespeare Society.

NEWBERRY AND RAMSAY WIN $50,000 IN SCHOLARSHIPS TO STUDY IN ENGLAND AS 2017 LUARD MORSE SCHOLARS

New York City: Ms. Serena Newberry, an English Education and Pre-Law major from Southfield, MI, a student at Xavier University of Louisiana, New Orleans, LA, and Mr. Leondre Ramsay, a Political Science major and Community Development minor from Tallahassee, FL, a student at Howard University, Washington, DC, have each been selected as recipients of an English-Speaking Union Luard Morse Scholarship. Christopher Broadwell, Executive Director of the English-Speaking Union, announced the winners, noting that each scholar will receive $25,000 toward a semester of study at any university their choosing in the United Kingdom during the 2017-2018 academic year.

Clementine: The Life of Mrs. Winston Churchill

The Boston Branch of the English Speaking Union invites you to a Spring social featuring Sonia Purnell, author of the much acclaimed biography Clementine: The Life of Mrs. Winston Churchill. The event will be held on Monday, March 21 at the New England Historic Genealogical Society, 101 Newbury Street, Boston. The talk will begin at 6 PM with a reception and book signing to follow from 7 to 8 PM.

33rd Annual Shakespeare Competition

The semi-finals for the 33rd Annual Shakespeare Competition for high school students will be held from 10 to 4 PM, Saturday, February 6 at the Campus Center Theater, Mt. Ida College, 777 Dedham St. Newton, MA. Finals will be held at the same location from 1 to 4 PM on Saturday, February 20. There is still time to participate. David Lough's No More Champagne: Churchill and His Money contributes to the Boston Athenæum's impressive collection of biographies, including several on Winston Churchill. The volume also deepens the Athenæum's collection of books that offer multiple perspectives on United States and European history.
The popular image of Winston Churchill is of a life of champagne and cigars but, behind the scenes, he struggled to prevent his personal financial problems from engulfing his political career. Only fragments of this story have previously emerged, but Lough has now pieced it together with the help of unprecedented access to the private records of Churchill and his associates.

Boston Branch Winner Places Third in National Shakespeare Competition

New York City, April 27, 2015 -- With a performance of a sonnet and monologue from Shakespeare, Sarah Spalding, a student of John Watt at Mid-Pacific Institute in Honolulu, won first prize at the 32nd annual English-Speaking Union National Shakespeare Competition. The Competition was held on April 27th at Lincoln Center Theater in New York City for 57 winners of ESU Branch competitions nationwide. Sarah had previously won the ESU Hawaii Branch regional competition. Her prize for placing first is a full scholarship to the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art's Young Actors Summer School in London, England.
The runner up of the English-Speaking Union National Shakespeare Competition, Evelyn Johnson, representing the Philadelphia Branch of the ESU, won a full scholarship to the American Shakespeare Center's Theatre Camp in Staunton, Virginia. Third place winner, Elizabeth Mears, representing the Boston Branch of the ESU, won $500 from The Shakespeare Society.
